I had the same question because this might be my topic for my school science fair. I am going to conduct an experiment in which a plant receives tea.

I know a family friend who gives tea to her houseplants. I went to their house and I saw that the plants were looking healthier and more perky than the other plants that were receiving water only.

Tea also has lots of nutrients and antioxidents in it too that are good for plants, and other people do say tea works wonders on plants so I would give plants some tea (without sugar, Sweet n' Low, honey, lemon etc.) and see what happens!

Also- if you're looking for your plants to grow better- try coffee because it is rich in nitrogen- which is an ingredient in commercial fertilizers. It is acidic, don't put it directly on the soil. ;)

I'll put up the results on my experiment, try it yourself and improve this answer with your results- just put them below.
