No. Currently, the "Republic of China" is Taiwan.

Mainland China is known as the "People's Republic of China".

Japan is known as just "Japan".

Of course, their original names are in their home languages.

Japan is an island archipelago in the Far East. It is speculated that Japan's LAND was once (millions of years ago, that is, before civilization was even imagined) connected to the rest of the Asian Continent with China, Korea and other Asian countries, but it's culture, language, religion, government, territory and nationality are totally different. The aboriginal people of Japan include (most prominently) the Ainus in the North (who also once lived in the northern islands now dominated by Russia) and the Ryuukyuu-jins in the South (mainly in Okinawa, they had their own kingdom called the Ryuukyuu Oukoku). Unfortunately, most of these people have died out due to epidemic and discrimination brought by the settlers. The settlers themselves came all over from Eastern Asia, such as the Mongolians and Chinese, the latter probably the most well known, leading to rather stupid go do some research questions like the above.

(I put this information in here because the last answer I deleted said that karate is Chinese). Contrary to some again rather mislead and under informed belief, karate is NOT Chinese, as can be deciphered just by the name 空手 (which means "Open Hand" or "Nothing in hand" in Japanese). Karate was developed by the same Ryuukyuu-jins above, when the settlers made it a law that the aboriginal people were not to practice their culture or handle weapons, in fear of retaliation. The Ryuukyuu-jins were the first to spawn the art of karate - it's form developed and was perfected over the years, and it came to be the martial art of self-defense we know now.

No. While they are on the same continent (Asia) Japan is a separate country and has never been part of China. However, Japan conquered parts of China for a brief time.
