Was John Lennon a closet Marxist?

I don't know the answer, so I'll just comment as follows: John Lennon was unconventional and a rebel. Like many other young people in the 1960s and early 1970s, he opposed American involvement in Vietnam. At that time many young people in the US and other Western countries were - usually in a somewhat vague sense - socialists. This doesn't mean that they were dogmatic Marxists except in a handful of cases. John Lennon made fun of Christianity but that doesn't make him a Marxist. If he had been a Marxist, why would he have been a closet Marxist? I done see why he would have felt any need to hide it. This isn't an answer, but it may help. Joncey

No. They expressed an admiration for Communist ideals (Paul McCartney called their company Apple Corps an experiment in "Western Communism", while John Lennon referred to his song "Imagine" as the Communist Manifesto set to music), but did not support the Communist Party, or Communist countries, in any way. They liked earning their own money, and speaking their own minds, far too much.

A religious-right book, The Marxist Minstrels, was published in 1973, that tried to place The Beatles at the forefront of an alleged movement within popular music to "soften up" the West for a Communist takeover. The book is rife with logical fallacies (particularly straw man, ad hominem and false dilemma), and quotes taken out of context.
