Is high school marching band a sport?

Yes, I am in my Schools Marching Band and we practice more than the football players, Marching is more than just holding and instrument up, playing, and moving, we also do visuals and go up to high speeds it is very difficult and even though a lot don't consider it a sport, I definitely would.

Marching band is currently considered an athletic activity in most high schools. While studies show that the physical exertion that is put forth in the marching band does not exceed that of other sports, and tends to be less intense than other sports. It was found that participating though does increase cardiorespiratory fitness and attributes to daily physical exercise that everyone needs. If mental exertion is any consideration of a sport as well, the marching band has a great way of utilizing multitasking. Marching in step to specific spots on a football field, while playing music, and performing choreographed visual movements that are all memorized is what creates the multitasking factor. Based on all of these facts, it could be said that yes marching band is a sport, or should be considered one.

It absolutely is. It is based in competition, it is incredibly physically demanding, and it is entertaining to watch (much more so, I would say, than what you would consider your average sports). If that doesn't qualify it as a sport, I don't know what could.

A reason to place it under Performing Arts instead of Sports might be because band members have to know how to play their instruments and the music before they can march and sometimes Marching Bands will perform sans marching.
