A certified personal trainer is certified to provide exercise and fitness advice and recommendations, but not medical nutrition therapy. Some may provide nutrition advice, but that does mean they are certified to do so and advice should be taken with extreme caution. A registered dietitian (not a nutritionist) is certified to provide medical nutrition therapy. Registered dietitians are required to have a bachelor's degree including classes approved by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, complete an accredited, supervised practice program at a health-care facility, community agency, and foodservice corporation; pass a national examination administered by the Commission on Dietetic Registration; and complete continuing professional educational requirements to maintain registration. Medical nutrition therapy should only be provided by registered dietitians (RD).
