No, they are not the same, isopropyl alchohol is a pure chemical substance or molecule, C3H7OH, sometimes otherwise known as Isopropyl Alchohol, Rubbing Alchohol, Hydroxypropane, etc, citing, http://chemicalland21.com/petrochemical/ISOPROPANOL.htm The above page also provides boiling points and melting points etc. Methylated Spirits or, (in the U.S.A Denatured alcohol) are a mixture of several different substances, usually complying to a generally accepted formula of, citing, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denatured_alcohol The above page also provides the various formula % information of the various chemicals used to 'denature' or 'methylate' the ethanol. Ethanol is the consumable vaiety of alchohol. Methanol is poisonous. Interestingly, it appears to be the case that for a sever case of methanol (moonshine) poisoning, the immediate first aid response should be copius amounts of ethanol, drinking (legal) alchohol, apparently the ethanol will block the effects of the methanol. Under the heading, Formulations http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denatured_alcohol You will find the standard formula for ingredients of 'Methylated Spirits', 'Denatured Alchohol' or 'Metho'. vk3kuf

I wouldn't recommend it. Acetone evaporates much faster than mineral spirits, so it's more likely to cause a flash fire.

Does Methylated spirit leave a residue?

It shouldn't, if it really is methylated spirit (a mixture of methanol and ethanol). However, some people... unfortunately very likely the same ones who tend to call it "methylated spirit" instead of "denatured alcohol", or even better give an actual formula... use the term generically for any denatured alcohol, including those that do leave a residue.

What is the most suitable investigation question to investigate evaporation using distilled water ethanol acetone and methylated spirit?

The first investigation question is, why are you comparing the evaporation rates of ethanol and methylated spirit? One of the most important things to know about methylated spirit is it's made so it can't be demethylated. This for several reasons, largely because alcohol beverage taxes are not levied on methylated spirit as they are on drinkable ethanol; if you could demethylate spirit then people would never buy booze, they'd just buy methylated spirit and fix it. One of their safeguards is to use an agent that evaporates at the same rate as ethanol (methanol, usually, which is where the name used in England comes from). This keeps people from distilling it.

Is isopropyl alcohol the same as denatured alcohol?

Isopropyl alcohol and rubbing alcohol are not the same thing. For most uses, yes you can. This is because: • Rubbing alcohol may contain either isopropyl alcohol or ethanol. • Rubbing alcohol is a mixture of compounds (type of denatured alcohol) whereas isopropyl alcohol is not.

How much rubbing alcohol will cause alcohol toxicity?

You shouldn't ever drink rubbing alcohol. It isn't the same as the alcohol in beer, wine, whiskey, etc. Rubbing alcohol is very dangerous and cause things like blindness and death.

Is denatured alcohol the same as methylated spirits?

Methylated spirits are a type of denatured alcohol. Denatured alcohol is any grain alcohol that has been rendered undrinkable by adding other chemicals. If the additive is methanol, then it is often given the name "methylated spirits". In the cosmetics industry, various chemicals are used that are not toxic. For example, denatured alcohol designated as "SD Alcohol 40B" contains a very small quantity of denatonium benzoate, an extremely bitter substance.

What is green rubbing alcohol used for?

Green rubbing alcohol is used in the same ways that regular rubbing alcohol is used. It is used for first-aid like scrapes and cuts, but generally has additives like menthol oil to smell and feel tingly and minty.

Can you drink rubbing alcohol as an internal disinfectant?

Do NOT Drink Rubbing Alcohol It can cause blindness. Rubbing alcohol is "isopropyl" alcohol, not the same chemical as grain alcohol, ("ethyl" alcohol). Don't drink it! Rubbing alcohol is POISONOUS to drink!

Is rubbing alcohol haram or halal?

The word "alcohol" in the term "rubbing alcohol" is meant in the chemical sense. It is not the same kind of alcohol present in alcoholic drinks. Rubbing alcohol contains about 70% 2-propanol and 30% water. 2-propanol is actually poisonous, so you shouldn't drink it regardless.

What is different between rubbing alcohol and isoprolhyt alcohol?

They're the same (isopropyl alcohol), generally speaking. Although there might be another "alcohol" compound that also goes by the name "rubbing alcohol".

Is rubbing alcohol evaporating absorbing or releasing energy?

Evaporating alcohol absorbs energy. The same is true of any substance that is evaporating.

Is methalated spirits the same as ethanol?

Actually yes - White spirit is also known as Stoddard Solvent or White Mineral Spirit or LAWS (low aromatic white spirit). The term Mineral Spirit is also sometimes used to describe Mineral Turpentine (Turpentine substitute) or HAWS (High Aromatic White Spirit)

Why does your hand feel cold when you drop methylated spirit on it?

methylated spirit is in fact methanol added to ethanol (usually 10% methanol is used). The liquid evaporates which means that the liquid converts to a gaseous state. This process requires energy which it extracts from your body in the form of heat. This same process cools you down when you sweat. The reason that spirits feel colder than say room temperature water is that the boiling point of alcohol is much lower than water(about 78 degrees C for ethanol and 100 degrees C for water). This means that at room temperature the partial pressure of ethanol is higher which means more of it is evaporating from your skin than water, requiring more energy(which makes your hand feel cold).
