The definition of a religious sect is: 'a subdivision of a larger religious group.'

Which Christian church came first? The Roman Catholic Church was the first Christian Church and today it is the largest with 1.1 billion members. Therefore every Christian denomination by definition is a subdivision or SECT of the Roman Catholic Church.

Now we come to the question. "Is Mormonism considered a sect?" It may be considered a sect by uneducated people, but Mormonism by definition it is not a SECT. The LDS Church (Mormonism) does not claim its roots as a break away or subdivision of the Roman Catholic Church or any other church. The LDS Church (Mormonism) has its roots as a independent Christian Church. Therefore Mormonism is NOT a Sect.

No. A religious sect is a group that has separated from an established church. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church) is a Restorationist faith, meaning that they believe the true Christian faith was restored to them by Jesus Christ, not reformed from another faith. The first Mormons did not split off from another church, but came out of many religious backgrounds. Since Mormonism did not split from another church or group, they cannot be categorized as a sect.

Mormonism is more accurately a denomination - an autonomous branch of Christianity.

However, it must be noted that there are sects within Mormonism. Groups such as the Community of Christ and the Apostolic United Brethren are sects because they split from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

No, not technically. A sect is a group which has broken away from another group. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (commonly called the "Mormon" church) did not break off of another group.

The Church wasorganized by Joseph Smith (who never officiallybelonged to any other religious organization) and it'soriginal founding members and leaders were former members of many popularChristiandenominations such as Presbyterians, Methodists, Lutherans, Unitarians, Episcopalians, and Baptists.

The Mormon Church claims to be a restoration or returnof the original first century Christian church as organized by Jesus Christ in the New Testament, it is not a reformation or break-off from any other religious organization, nor is it based on any other modern religous organization. It takes it's beliefs, organization, doctrines, and practices straight from The Bible or from direct revelation from God to a living prophet.

There are, however, "sects" of Mormonism, or small groups which have broken away from the mainstream Mormon church.
