Second, an atom is the smallest unit of matter that retains the properties of an element

Nitrogen is an element (elements are anything listed in the Periodic Table) meaning it cannot be broken down into any other substance. So, it is the smallest unit of matter that is still nitrogen.

Soo Nitrogen IS an atom, multiple N atoms covalently bonded would be a molecule

N=1 nitrogen atom

N2=nitrogen molecule
