According to vets.com petroleum jelly is fine for cats, to help eliminate hair balls, in moderation. You can also use canned pumpkin for a hairball remedy. Either work great but the pumpkin is a more natural remedy.

Vaseline should be used sparingly, but it is safe to use a little on a cat. One of the classic (though suspect) cures for hairballs is to put a little vaseline on the cat's paw. The cat will lick it off, and the oil will "grease" the hair's passage through to the other end. If you are going to try this, the suggested quantity of vaseline is about the size of the eraser on the end of a pencil.

Petroleum jelly is poisonous to all house pets. Do not use petroleum-based products on a cat because he may become very sick.
