It's the basic unit of light and other forms of electromagnetic radiation. If you're asking if it's "light" in the weight sense, yes. It has a rest mass of zero; you can't get lighter than that.

Yes, it is in fact the gauge boson for electromagnetism, which means that is the carrier particle involved in interactions between charged hadrons and fermions that have electromagnetic charges.

I personally am not aware of the system by which it does this, but you can probably find out with some research.

No. Matter has mass and takes up space. A photon doesn't have mass.
