Is placing chlorine tabs in the skimmer of an in-ground pool an effective method of maintaining proper chlorine levels?

ABSOLUTLY NOT! The first thing that will fail is the pool heater. Tabs in the skimmer could be extremely costly.

Small amounts of chlorine gas can be made in the laboratory by putting concentrated hydrochloric acid in a flask with a side arm and rubber tubing attached. Manganese dioxide is then added and the flask stoppered. The reaction is not greatly exothermic. As chlorine is denser than air, it can be collected by placing the tube inside a flask where it will displace the air. Once full, the collecting flask can be stoppered.

well I have the same issue as you ... I heard that by placing a pair of stockings at each end of the pool (shallow and deep)it should move toward the leak ... I just cut one pair of stockings in two ... still waiting for the outcome I just started it this evening ... good luck to you ...
