Puss in Boots is an anthropomorphic character in fairy tale books written by various authors.

These included:

Giovanni Straparola (Italian) around 1550

Giambattista Basile (Naples) around 1605

Charles Perrault (Le Chat Botté , French) around 1700

In Perrault's story, the cat is the only inheritance received by a miller's third son, but which through its guile and persistence win for its master the hand of a princess.

A version of Puss in Boots appears as a featured character in the Shrek series of animated movies, most notably in Shrek 2 (2004) and in his own prequel 3-D feature Puss in Boots (2011). He is a swordsman, voiced by Antonio Banderas.

Another animated version of the cat, named Pero, appears in a series of three Japanese movies in 1969, 1972, and 1976, beginning with "The Wonderful World of Puss in Boots" (Nagagutsu o Haita Neko."
