Is slim fast diet ok for people with hypothyroidism?

Thank-you for answering this question. I am actually on Slim Fast and have hypothyroidism. I just didn't think about how it would affect the hypothyroidism when I went on it but I've just done some research on the internet and looked at the ingredients and I'm not sure whether it's such a good idea. With hypothyroidism you are told to (on some of these hypothyroidism websites) avoid the 'goitrogenic' foods such as kale, green cabbage, corn, soy, foods containing iodine like seaweed, etc... as eating these foods can interrupt the absorption of the thyroid medication you are on. I'm not sure whether this is true but it's worth keeping an eye out and not eating this sort of thing all the time.

Looking at the slim fast bottle, not only is the third ingredient sugar (which is especially not good for people with hypothyroidism, especially if you want to lose or maintain your weight as it is so much harder for us anyways!), it also contains soya and potassium iodate. Even though these may not be in huge quantities, they are still there and if they are going to affect the absorption of your medication it might not be worth it. If the medication isn't absorbed, you might still get one of the side effects of hypothyroidism anyways i.e weight gain.

I'm definitely not a doctor, but from looking all over the internet, asking my doctor and just reading all the 'man-made' ingredients and fillers on the ingredients list of the bottle, I would say it isn't a good idea to use it and I'm definitely not using it again as I don't think you should take any chances with a serious health condition like this.
