Steak is common in every part of the world where meat is eaten. It is simply the name for usually fairly lean slices of meat cut from the fleshy part of the animal.

It refers to the slices of meat fried or grilled in fairly large pieces and served whole, or to the meat when it is cut up for stews, stirfries, and so on.

The word is first recorded in English in the fifteenth century, and is thought to have come from the Old Norse word, steik, meaning roast meat.

The only differences between steak in America and steak cooked anywhere else are variations in the way it is cooked and the way it is served.
