The character in the novel is called Isherwood Williams, nicknamed Ish. He returned to civilisation after some days away to discover that most of it was wiped out by a virus. He then met a light-skinned African American called Emma and they raise a safe community together until a tragedy strikes.
The story of this novel is very similar to the 'Ish' subplot in the game.
