I have the same problem with my 1990 Olds Cutlass Calais, 5 speed. I've noticed that if I force the Reverse gear into the bottom right corner of the pattern, the lights will turn on. my 87 does the same thing. i found if just a small light on the sensor located just off the lft upper corner of the dash gets light, it lights my dash like a new car. i believe that sensor is MY particular problem.
