It is believed that, not only was the lighthouse at Alexandria the tallest lighthouse in the world for its time, but no lighthouse constructed since then has equalled it in height.

It employed remarkable technology for the time, and stood for many centruies before being destroyed by a series of earthquakes.

Yes, the Lighthouse of Alexandria, also known as the Pharos, was a real lighthouse. In keeping with the technology of the time, the light was a gigantic fire on top of the tower.

At the time of its completion, it was the first lighthouse in the world and the tallest building in existence, apart from the Great Pyramid. Its light was said to have been visible for 35 miles - 55km - out to sea.

Sadly, no. It was severely damaged by several earthquakes, beginning in c. 365 CE (AD) to finally succumb to one in the Middle Ages & collapse into harbor. However, there are apparently still some enormous blocks from it submerged in the present harbor of Alexandria, where underwater archeological research has been ongoing...

Constructed between c. 290-310 BCE (BC), it was the last of the legendary "Seven Wonders" of the ancient world to be built, and at a (presently educated estimated) height of some 450 feet (137+ meters) it was certainly a wonder, second only to the Great Pyramid for being the tallest structure ever built until modern times. This, together with exactly how the light in this tower was created/functioned being still something of a mystery, has spawned many fanciful (mostly Medieval) stories about the Pharos Lighthouse, which make for amusing reading, but little they say should be taken seriously...
