Best Answer

Dogs are carnivores, although they are not an obligate carnivore like cats. Meat provides most, if not all, the nutrients a dog needs. However, dogs are very adaptable and can scavenge for food, so their stomachs can deal with vegetable matter. Plants and vegetables can be used as part of a dog's diet, but they aren't a necessity.

Dogs can survive on an omnivorous diet, but it does not mean it is the best diet for them. The assumption that dogs are natural omnivores remains to be proven, whereas the truth about dogs being natural carnivores is very well-supported by the evidence available to us.

Naturally all dogs and canines are carnivores.

However some owners do give their dogs a vegetarian diet. This can actually be very dangerous for the dogs health as they are not getting the vitamins their bodies require which are only found in meat.

Added:

Dogs are not obligate carnivores but come from ancestral stock, wolves, that lived as carnivores, though not obligate carnivores. A balanced vegetarian diet is possible for dogs, but the question there is this. Why?

Dogs and their immediate wolf ancestors practice a very limited form of vegetarianism. Wolves have been known to eat berries and all canines eat some vegetative matter for the nutrients and as an emetic when needed

They are carnivores just as wolves are. They may eat other things but meat is really what their digestive system is set up for.
