The skull is actually several large, flat bones that are connected by sutures (an immovable synarthritic joint).

The occipital bone makes up the rear part of the skull (the back of the head). The temporal bone forms the sides of the skull and protects the structures of the inner ear. The parietal bone has a left and right hemisphere -- like the brain -- and connects to the frontal bone (the forehead).
