The turning point of a story is when it goes in a different direction, one which will resolve it. This can be different things to different types of stories. In a tragedy, it's the point when things start to go bad for the main characters. In a rags-to-riches story it's the point when it seems that the hero is done for, but then he or she gets a big break. In a sports story it's the point when you think the Home Team is going to lose, and then they manage to win the Big Game. In a quest story, it's the point when you think the quest is going to fail, but then something happens which allows it to succeed. In a detective story it is when all pertinent fact have been established and the 'mystery' can be solved from that point. In a love story it is when all obstacles to love have been over-come and there remains nothing to further impede consummation - the impediments however are the whole rasion-d'ete (reason for being) for the story so this usually happens near the very end.

Other words for the turning point are fulcrum, climax, epiphany and resolve.

However, another term is "anticlimax", which means the turning point in a story that is always a letdown. It is the point at which you learn that the story will not turn out the way you had expected.

A turning point *can* be a climax in a plot, but isn't always. Usually there can be several turning points... minor obstacles overcome, etc., but there is only one ultimate climax in a plot. An example would be a coming-of-age novel. In many of these novels, the boy on the cusp of manhood lives in a small town. Then something dramatic happens, and although the boy is satisfied with his life and his surroundings, he is forced to leave and is unlikely to ever return. This is a definite turrning point for this boy's life, and for the novel, because it is the beginning of the strange new adventure stage. ... However, it is not the climax of the novel.

The climax is a turning point because everything that the main character has been striving for is either achieved or gained, or less often, failed or lost. It's the culmination of all the other actions in the story and something is going to change whether for the good or for the bad. If nothing changes, then there is really no point in the story.

The Turning Point of a story is when you realize what the main character did that shaped its future, if they hadnt of made that one desicion, then the book wouldnt end the way it ended, theres no turning back, the character cant undo it. The climax is when you reach that "aha" moment in the book, when all the pieces fit together, everything in the book since then has been snippets and pieces of imformation you dont quite understand until the climax, when you understand the whole book..... hope I cleared it up for ya!
