Is the fuel pump in a 1997 Ford Taurus located in the gas tank and what is the estimate of repair cost for replacement of the fuel pump?

Approximate cost $130-$160 US for the part (new). Different parts depending on engine size and type. I'm going looking at a junkyard for a used one tomorrow. Hopefully less than $50.

I expect the repair to take most of a day with my friend helping. The best you can do is not break anything else in the process of fixing it. Suppose shops would charge $400-$600 US for the job or even higher at dealer.

The fuel pump is located in the fuel tank, you have to drain the tank and lower it, there is an access hatch on top of the tank you remove by screwing it counterclockwise, the fuel pump and fuel gauge sending unit are located just below the round hatch. you can tell if the fuel pump is turning on by turning the key to the on but not start position. you should be able to hear the pump run for a few seconds before it build pressure and shuts off shuts off. there is also a relay module that sits on top of the radiator. you have to pull a flat plastic cover off the top of the radiator to expose it. it is about 3 1/2 x 5 inches and has about a dozen wires or so connected to it. this relay also controls other things like the electric cooling fan etc.
