# Is the number positive if the power is negative?

012 ###### 2013-01-15 21:20:51

It does not work that way.

A negative power is simply the reciprocal.

So that x-a = 1/xa

The reciprocal is negative or positive according to whether the number itself is negative or positive. [And, if the number is 0, the reciprocal is not defined.]

## Related Questions Please consider the following two facts: A negative number to an even power is positive; but a negative number to an odd power is negative. Any positive number is greater than any negative number. (positive number) x (positive number) = positive number (positive number)/(positive number) = positive number (positive number) x ( negative number) = negative number (positive number)/( negative number) = negative number (negative number) x (negative number) = positive number (negative number)/(negative number) = positive number When a negative number is raised to an even power the result is a positive number A positive number times a positive number is always positive. A negative number times a negative number is always positive. Therefore, any square number will be positive. Any number to the fourth power (a square times a square) will always be positive. And so on. A positive number. Positive Number x Positive Number = Positive Number Positive Number x Negative Number = Negative Number Negative Number x Negative Number = Positive Number A negative number. A positive number x a positive number = a positive number A negative number x a negative number = a positive number A positive number x a negative number = a negative Hope this helps :D Yes. Any positive number to an exponent is positive. No, or more accurately "not necessarily".A negative to any even power is positive. -2, -4, -6 etc. are even, so a negative number raised to any of those powers will be positive. However, a negative number raised to an odd negative power (-1, -3, -5 etc.) will be negative. A positive number times a positive number will always get you a positive number A negative number times a negative number will always get you a positive number (same signs will get you a positive number) but A positive number times a negative number will always get you a negative number or A negative number times a positive number will always get you a negative number (different signs will get you a negative number) The result of multiplying a positive number by a negative number is a negative number. A negative divided by a positive is negative. A negative divided by a negative is positive. A positive divided by a positive is positive. A positive divided by a negative is negative. If you divide a positive number by a positive number, the result is positive. If you divide a positive number by a negative number, the result is negative. If you divide a negative number by a positive number, the result is negative. If you divide a negative number by a negative number, the result is again positive. A negative number times a positive number will give you a negative product.A negative number times a positive number will give you a negative product.A negative number times a positive number will give you a negative product.A negative number times a positive number will give you a negative product. If the negative number is bigger, you get a negative number as an answer. If the positive number is bigger, you get a positive number as an answer. No No. Positive number multiplied by a negative number gives a negative number. A number to a negative power is equal to One divided by number to its positive power. So, x^-2 is equal to 1/x2. Yes, a negative number subtracted from a positive number will always be positive. Subtracting a negative number is the same as adding the opposite of the negative number. The opposite of a negative number is always positive. A positive number plus a positive number is always positive. You get a positive number because a negative number reverses the other negative so it becomes a positive number. A negative number divided by a positive number will be a negative number. For example: -20 / 4 = -5 -100 / 2 = -50 Here are the other cases of division by positive or negative numbers. A negative number divided by a negative number would be a positive number. A positive number divided by a positive number would be a positive number. A positive number divided by a negative number would be a negative number. Rules When Dividing Positive and Negative Numbers:Rule 1: A positive number divided by a negative number gives you a negative number.Rule 2: A negative Number divided by a negative number gives you a positive numberRule 3: A positive number divided by a positive number gives you a positive number. The result will always be negative. Positive X Positive = Positive Negative X Negative = Positive Positive X Negative = Negative
