A construction or builders hoarding is a type of temporary fence that has an impervious cladding (not shade cloth or vinyl skins) to stop dust and debris from escaping the site; therefore, protecting the public, with the cladding being a substance that will withstand the forces of heavy, sharp or dangerous objects or projectiles. Most builders hoardings are made from 12 plywood or metal sheeting with a minimum BMT of .35mm. Hoardings can be either counterweighted or have posts driven or concreted into the ground. More information on the minimum requirements for hoardings can be found in "The Australian Standard for Temporary Fences and Hoarding."
To go into a bit more depth, the most common hoardings in residential and small developments are type 'A' hoardings. These are the simple metal fence structure that are most commonly covered in green or black fabric. They are mainly for the safety of the general public and to restrict unauthorized access to the site.
