Is the word 'Family' a common noun or a collective noun?

The noun family is a common noun, a word for any family; and a collective noun used for any type of family, for example a family of artists, a family of doctors, a family of adventurers, etc. The family doesn't have to be related people to use the collective, it can be used for a closely knit group of people.
