No, the rear axle shaft does not have an internal retainer clip. You remove the four nuts on the inside of the brake backing plate and remove the axle shaft with a slide hammer and hub adapter.
First remove the front clip (headlights and grille and plastic covering the bumper.) The rest will be obvious.
More than likely a loose air hose. Easy to fix, just tighten or get a new jubilee clip
The 2003 Honda Element dashboard is held in place with six retaining bolts and eight retaining clips. Remove the retaining bolts and pry outward on each retaining clip.
There are 3 to worry about, 1 from the master cylinder to the rear frame, in this case you'll probably need 2 pieces, 6 feet is about the longest I have seen at the auto parts store so measure the distance and buy 2 pieces and a union, 1/4 inch line and 3/8ths fitting. From there loosen and remove the fittings and pop the line out of the retainers on the frame, bend and tighten the MC end first and pop it into the retainers as you go all the way back to the rear frame, there is a bracket back there to hold the fitting tight, bend the tube to make it reach this bracket. The next piece is a flex line, and it is held to the bracket with a clip, remove the clip and slide the fitting out, disconnect it from the line at the rear axle and replace. Next is the line going from the left rear to the right rear, it is bent and routed through 2 brackets on the axle so try to match these bends, as well as the bends at either end, this one will need to be measured pretty accurately. connect the lines to the cylinders open the bleeder at the rr wheel and pump fluid through until you get a good stream, now proceed with normal bleeding.

You have to pry the clip out of the slot behind the handle
By removing the outer hub from the axle and you put a pry bar between the inner axle and the C clip holding it in. The axle is really in there so use a huge screwdriver or pry bar.
There is a small C-Clip on the end of the Axle Shaft (inside of the differential) that holds the axle in place. This clip may have been busted or fell off the end of the axle shaft.
The axle shaft is retained from the inside with a horseshoe looking clip. The axle shaft is retained from the inside with a horseshoe looking clip.

The axle will separate by prying on it. It can be difficult. Do not pull from the outer end of the axle (wheel end). The inner CV joint will come apart (you don't want that).
