Is there a difference between liquid chlorine for the pool and chlorine tablets?

It's funny because I just came back from a seminar on safety compliance at a major manufacturer of these products and they did a complete section on sodium hypochlorite and another different on gas and liquid chlorine. They made sure we all understand that liquid chlorine and sodium hypochlorite are two completely different animals and they behave differently. However, for practical reasons many people in the pool and water treatment industry use the terms "sodium hypochlorite", "bleach", and "liquid chlorine" to refer to the same chemical, where bleach and sodium hypochlorite can be the came product but liquid chlorine is not. The main issue can arise when an accident occurs and people call emergency telling them that they had a spill of "liquid chlorine" when in fact it was "sodium hypochlorite", there is a considerable difference in the way both chemicals have to be controlled.

As the chlorine ion, which is part of common salt and other compounds, it is abundant in nature and necessary to most forms of life, including humans. In its elemental form (Cl2 or "dichlorine") under standard conditions, chlorine is a powerful oxidant and is used in bleaching and disinfectants. As a common disinfectant, chlorine compounds are used in Swimming Pools to keep them clean and sanitary.

∙ 14y agoLiquid chlorine is just that, but it has only 12-15% actual chlorine. Tabs are 1/2 chlorine and 1/2 cyanuric acid. The acid helps stabilize the chlorine.
You're better off getting Calcium Hypochloride, which is a granular form of chlorine. It's safer, lighter, and is about 65% chlorine.

They are entirely separate cleaning products.
Liquid detergent is merely a liquid form of the same surfactants as in powdered detergent. It allows water to dissolve dirt and other compounds from the laundry.
Liquid bleach is a HAZARDOUS SUBSTANCE, a solution of sodium hypochlorite, which can take out organic stains but can also damage fabrics. It is also IRRITATING to skin and INJURIOUS to eyes, mucous membranes, or lungs, or if taken internally. Take precautions when using any bleach. Minors should not handle liquid chlorine bleach.

But some systems are really on-site waste treatment plants. After the septic tank the liquid flows through a sand filter which is populated by aerobic bacteria. After passing through the sand filter, the liquid is chlorinated and then discharged. In this type of system you do need chlorine tablets. And they have to be the right kind of tablets. DON'T use tablets designed for swimming pools! In my system there is a small black box next to the driveway. Inside that box are two white plastic tubes. That's where the chlorine tablets go. Your system may be different.
