No. You need to have an OBD scanner. OBD = On Board Diagnostics, all modern cars have these. Most cars prior to 1994 have OBD-I, anything after that usually has OBD-II, which is more advanced. The scanner will tell you which code is setting off the light, and allow you to clear the codes. If you live near an Autozone store, they will do this for free. For some codes (not all), they will get reset after 20 cycles or so of on/off driving. Pull the codes from the computer, match the code to the troubleshooting procedure, follow the procedure to find the source. Repair the source, light will go out if that was the only problem. There are "monitors" or self test the computer runs the car through, if a problem occurs, it may not run all of the self tests until that problem is taken care. Therefore, another problem may exist. It is emission related. OBD II was compliant in 1996, there are a few earlier ones but not many. A really simple way to reset your service engine light is to simply disconnect the negative terminal of the battery for about 5-10 minutes. Then, you just reconnect the negative terminal at the battery and the light should be off. IF THE LIGHT COMES BACK ON, GO TO AN AUTHORIZED SERVICE SHOP. Most people tend to think that this light isn't important or that it is designed to turn on after a certain amount of time...but they are wrong. A lit service engine soon light means that there is a problem with the powertrain that is adversely affecting emissions. Ignoring the problem can lead to loss of fuel economy, power, and damage to other components such as the catalytic converter.
