Testing a dogâ??s ability to recognize different scents of family members is a good science project for kids. Can your family pet recognize your scent from your momâ??s? You can begin by training the dog to recognize your scent and fetch objects you have touched. Then see if the pup can do the same if you follow the same steps for another family member. The final test would be to have the pup fetch object on command for a person from a group of everyone's objects.
You could place a mouse/rat/guinea pig in a maze and put its favorite treat in the end.
You could also test more than one animal and ask yourself "Who's smarter, a mouse or a guinea pig?"
Another idea with dogs is to test their paw preference

It depends on whether or not you school science fair is affiliated with the International Science Fair Group. The rule for them is that if your project will/does cause harm to a vertebrate, then the project cannot be entered into the fair. As a science teacher I would not allow a student to do a science project on the subject, because of the harm to the animal. In order to correctly do the experiment you would need at least 15 dogs that had the same parasite, were the same age, same weight, same breed, etc. Choose something easier to do than this.
