You can't set the timing but you can either advance or retard it from the distributor.

The timing on that engine is computer controlled. It requires an engine scanner to set the timing. No other way.

How do you set the timing on an 83 350 with points type distributor?

A 1983 engine doesn't have points, but if you have changed to a points distributor use the same timing settings that were used with the original distributor. if you can time an engine with a hei dist. it's the same way with points. you have to use a timing light, and turn the dist. to retard ,or advance the timing. If the engine has been fitted with a GM type distributor there should be an access door to the side of the distributor cap. Use a "dwell tach" (with the engine running) to set the dwell, then use the timing light to set the timing. If it's not a HEI ignition then it's safe to assume that it's not EFI either so you'll set the timing by loosening the retaining bolt at the base of the distributor, then turn the distributor to align the timing mark with the amount of advance indicated for your altitude. The timing light will cause the mark to appear that the dampener pulley has stopped and you will be able to move the mark as you turn the distributor. NOTE! When setting the timing always remember to disconnect the vacuum line.

Witch way do you twist the distributor to advance the timing?

To advance ignition timing, loosen the distributor clamp and in very small increments turn the distributor body in the OPPOSITE direction of the rotor's normal rotation. If you don't know which way the rotor turns, you can find out easily by removing the distributor cap and having a helper turn the engine over with the ignition key switch. To advance the timing turn the distributor counter clockwise.

How do you set timing on a 2001 Chevrolet s 10 with a 4.3liter v6?

Bring the number one cylinder on compression stroke up to TDC. Drop distributor in with the rotor pointing to the number one on the distributor cap. Install and tighten clamp with bolt. The clamp will only fit one way around the base of the distributor. This sets the initial base timing. The timing from there is adjusted by the ECM with information gathered from various sensors.

Where does position 1 wire on distributor for 3.1 start?

Easiest way to find it is to set #1 piston at TDC, remove the distributor cap and see where the rotor is pointing. It should be pointing to position #1 in relation to the distributor cap.

How do you disable the computer to set the timing on a 1997 dodge ram 5.9?

It doesn't work that way. You set initial distributor timing by lining up the crank at tdc and the rotor with the mark on the pickup plate. The next step requires a scan tool and can not be done with a timing light. Using the scan tool, the distributor is set to be in sync with the crank position sensor. It doesn't work that way. How do you set the timing on a 2000 Chevy blaze with edi distributors?

You can't set the timing yourself, the computer does it. If it seems like it is out of time it could be spark plugs, cap and rotor, or the distributor is off a tooth. The edi distributor has an 8 and a 6 on the inside after you take the cap off. Get the engine at top dead center then line the rotor up so it points to the 6. When you put the cap on it will be pointing at the #2 plug, but this is the correct way. If those things don't work could also be plug wires or fuel air mixure. Hope this helps.

Disconnect the 4 way plug at the distributor so as to put the computer offline. Set the timing to specs and then reconnect the 4 way plug.
