Is there any way to turn off the Service Engine Soon light in a 2002 Mercury Mountaineer without visiting the dealership and waiting for 2 hours?

Yes, take it to an independent reapir shop and wait for one hour. If you understand the check engine light and required diagnosis, you would make arrangements to drop the truck off at an independent garage that specializes in this. Find one through the local Snap-on Dealer.

I had the same problem with my 2002 ford explorer in 2008. I took my vehicle to the dealership and ended up having to have my torque converter which is inside of the transmission replaced. Yes it was costly!
