There are currently 5 recognised Dwarf Planets.

  • Ceres - is between Mars and Jupiter in the asteroid belt.
  • Pluto
  • Eris
  • Makemake
  • Haumea

For a list of dwarf planet candidates, see related link.

There are currently five known "dwarf planets", but it is certain that there are many more in the Kuiper Belt that have not yet been identified.

Any body in the Kuiper Belt with enough mass to attain "hydrostatic equilibrium" - meaning that it has enough mass that its gravity crushes it into a sphere - will be another "dwarf planet". There may be dozens or hundreds of them, but they are so small and far away that we haven't noticed them yet.

Wait about 6 more years, until the James Webb Space Telescope is launched. It ought to be able to pick out a few.

NASA's "New Horizons" spacecraft will reach the Kuiper Belt during July 2015 to study Pluto and its moons up close for the first time, and also other objects in the belt.

There are eight planets in our solar system and five dwarf planets. Its unlikely that we'll find more planets in orbit around our sun, but there may be more dwarf planets to be discovered or classified. There are also other planets in orbit around other star systems called exoplanets. These are very far away, so have been very difficult to detect, but so far over 500 have been identified.

The current list of "dwarf planets" (round bodies that orbit the Sun independently) includes, in order of their orbital distance : * Ceres (950 km in diameter and 1/3 of the total mass of the asteroid belt) * Pluto (2390 km in diameter and formerly the 9th solar planet) * Haumea (ellipsoid Kuiper Belt object about 1/3 Pluto's mass) * Makemake (about 1800 km in diameter and a bit farther out than Haumea) * Eris (at 2500 km in diameter and 1.27 the mass of Pluto, the largest discovered Kuiper object. With Dysnomia, its moon, it orbits the Sun once in 557 years.) Candidates for dwarf planet status include Sedna, pending verification of its mass and shape. (Sedna's closest approach to the Sun is barely within the Kuiper Belt, and its orbit may extend to nearly 1000 AU, into the Oort Cloud of comets.)

Ofcourse they will! They try never to give up and they are always continously trying to find life in other planets. The radio dishes are always up and awake to find any signal from outer space. Recently one planet has been found in another solar system which is very hot and rocky though just like earth 3 quarters of it is water. Though this was not done by NASA, a very popular space agency, It has been done by some space agencies in Paris, though the news-letter has not told which one. For further updates, go to www.timesofindia.com and see if you can find further details..Till then, bye...

Yes. There are 4 others: Ceres, Haumea, Makemake, and Eris. Other objects are being considered for classification as dwarf planets as well.

Why is there 8 planets?

In 2006 the international astronomical union changed the definition of what a planet was. This meant that Pluto no longer met the definition of what a classic planet was and it was demoted to a dwarf planet status instead.

What other objects are in the solar system besides the sun and eight planets?

In addition to the Sun and the eight planets, there are:moons5 dwarf planets (Ceres, Pluto, Haumea, Makemake, and Eris)approximately 200 possible candidates for dwarf planets (The largest of which is called Sedna)more than 700,000 asteroids comets and other bodies

What is the tenth planet away from the sun?

There are only 8 major planets in the solar system, since Pluto (the old ninth planet) was re classified as a dwarf planet. If we did count the 5 additional dwarf planets, then Pluto would be the tenth one out, since there is a dwarf planet called Ceres between Mars and Jupiter.

It is not a gas giant or an inner planet?

There are four small inner planets and four large outer planets, with 8 planets in total. Pluto, along with the other dwarf planets are not part of this eight, so it could be this were talking about here - but Pluto is no longer considered a planet.

How are inner planets alike?

No, it is a dwarf planet. Uh.....the question was about Pluto's position in the solar system, not Pluto's size. Pluto was thought to be the ninth planet when discovered in the 1930's, but we now know that Pluto is not a planet. When it was still considered a planet, it was one of the outer planets, about as far as you can get. Mercury, Venus, Terra (earth), and Mars are the inner planets; those with orbits between the Belt and Sol (the asteroid belt and the sun).

Why is Pluto known as a planet but it is a dwarf planet and no other dwarf planets are?

Well, Pluto isn't recognized as a planet, but as a dwarf planet. Also, there are other dwarf planets, but they are more like really big comets than they are planets.

Do the planet Pluto is in the solarsystem?

If your question is "is Pluto a part of the solar system" then the answer is Yes. s Pluto, may have been excluded from the list of planets, but is now a dwarf planet. We have other dwarf planets too like Eris and Ceres

What orbits Pluto?

Pluto orbits the sun along with the other dwarf planets.

What are the two well known dwarf planets?

These are currently defiend as dwarf planets: Ceres Pluto Haumea Makemake Eris There are some other ateroids that are currently considered candidates for dwarf planet status, however further study is required to confirm.
