Yes. If a user ingests too much of anything (even water!), it can become toxic. However, with the nicotine amounts found in e-cigs, it would be exceedingly difficult to receive a toxic dose of nicotine, when used as directed.

There are electronic cigarettes without nicotine, namely the SMOKeFREE electronic cigarette. So in this circumstance, the answer would be no.

However, different brands do contain different levels of nicotine. With regular cigarettes the filter reduces the amount of nicotine one inhales however with electronic cigarettes the nicotine is obsorbed quickly through mouth, throat and lungs. The theory is that because you're inhaling more of nicotine without a filter - the higher volume you're receiving. Some say upwards of 300% volume of regular cigarettes.

Research is being done by many organizations interested in knowing the answer to this question - since nicotine is considered a drug by the Food Drug Administration - I'm going to assume one can take too much and result in an overdose. However, only time and research will tell.

Electronic cigarettes (e-cigs) are the most common prototype of ENDS.The safety of ENDS has not been scientifically demonstrated. The potential risks they pose for the health of users remain undetermined. Furthermore, scientific testing indicates that the products vary widely in the amount of nicotine and other chemicals they deliver and there is no way for consumers to find out what is actually delivered by the product they have purchased.

Most ENDS contain large concentrations of propylene glycol, which is a known irritant when inhaled. The testing of some of these products also suggests the presence of other toxic chemicals, aside from nicotine. In addition, use of these products -when they contain nicotine- can pose a risk for nicotine poisoning (i.e. if a child of 30 Kilos of weight swallows the contents of a nicotine cartridge of 24 mg this could cause acute nicotine poisoning that most likely would cause its death) and a risk for addiction to nonsmokers of tobacco products. Nicotine, either inhaled, ingested or in direct contact with the skin, can be particularly hazardous to the health and safety of certain segments of the population, such as children, young people, pregnant women, nursing mothers, people with heart conditions and the elderly. ENDS and their nicotine cartridges and refill accessories must be kept out of the reach of young children at all times in view of the risk of choking or nicotine poisoning.

As ENDS do not generate the smoke that is associated with the combustion of tobacco, their use is commonly believed by consumers to be safer than smoking tobacco. This illusive 'safety' of ENDS can be enticing to consumers; however, the chemicals used in electronic cigarettes have not been fully disclosed, and there are no adequate data on their emissions.

How many packs of electronic cigarettes refills would it take to kill you if ingested?

An e-cigarette cartilage (one electric cigarette) can be filled with a solution containing different amounts of nicotine. On average, one contains about 3.6mg of nicotine. For an adult, who is a non-smoker, about 60mg would be fatal. So about 17 electric cigarettes, smoked in short succession could kill someone. However due to a number of factors (such as the absorption of the nicotine, the person's tolerance, and the density of the nicotine solution) it would probably take more to deliver a fatal dose.

Are electric cigarettes bad for you?

It would be unusual for an e cigarette to cause vomiting, however, different people have different chemical sensitivities or allergies, so it would certainly be possible. However, any person who can smoke a regular, tobacco cigarette without vomiting would be able to inhale nicotine from an e cigarette without vomiting. And if you don't smoke tobacco, there really is no need to use e cigarettes either. The e cigarette is just a device to help people to overcome cigarette addiction. If you just inhale nicotine, that is a lot safer than inhaling smoke, with the tar, carbon monoxide, and other toxins that it contains in addition to nicotine.

How does the nicotine kill you or what does it do to kill you?

The nicotine is basically the compound in tobacco that keeps a person addicted. The tar is what will line the insides of your lungs and kills the alveoli. The rat poison in the tobacco product is what attacks your heart.

Can a 14 year old buy electronic cigarettes?

In the UK, electronic cigarettes are subject to the same restrictions as real cigarettes. That means that you have to be over 18 to buy them. The same goes for nicotine patches and gum. It's the nicotine in them that means they're not for sale to minors.
