Inland ponds (ie, not near the ocean) are normally fresh water, and are formed either by precipitation (rain, snow, etc.) or by underground, or artesian water sources. Large ponds of this type are often called kettle lakes, in that they have no visible source of water supplying them, such as a river or stream.

Ponds can also be formed by receding ocean tides and, in this case, will contain salt water. Of course, when the tide rises again, the pond will simply become part of the ocean, so these ponds are not permanent but exist only when the tide is out.
