The axial skeleton consists of the bones that lie in the longitudinal axis of the body, running through its center of gravity. The bones of the axial skeleton include the bones of the skull, ribs, sternum, vertebrae, and the hyoid.

The appendicular skeleton consists of the bones of the upper and lower extremities, including the pectoral girdle and the pelvic girdle. The bones of the appendicular skeleton include the following: clavicle, scapula, humerus, radius, ulna, carpals, metacarpals, and phalanges of the upper extremities; the OS coxa, femur, tibia, fibula, metatarsals, and the phalanges of the lower extremities.

The 26 vertebrae of the axial skeleton can further be broken down into 5 parts as follows: 7 cervical vertebrae, 12 thoracic vertebra, 5 lumbar vertebra, 1 sacrum, and 1 coccyx. Therefore, the coccyx would be part of the axial skeleton, not the appendicular skeleton.

They are included because they are both essential in aiding the arm in movement. The clavicle meets the scapula at the acromion process on the scapula. At the acromioclavicular joint, the ligaments help to keep the two connected and it allows the scapula to move freely as the arm moves. It all comes together to keep the shoulder in place and moving.

We are composed of one skeleton that can be divided into two major regions, the axial and appendicular skeleton. The axial skeleton makes up our central axis and consists of the following bones: skull, vertebrae, ribs and sternum.

The appendicular skeleton consists of the limbs and girdles. The girdles are the attachment points for the limbs. The pelvic girdle is the attachment point for our thigh bone (femur). The pectoral girdle serves as the attachment point for our upper arm (humerus).

The vertebrae in the neck are part of the axial skeleton.

The clavicle does belong to the appendicular skeleton. It is a part of the pectoral girdles, which contains 4 bones, 2 in the clavicle, and 2 in the scapula.
