The quality most desirable for a species as a whole to survive is a two part question. First of all lets depict the strengths and weaknesses of what makes a species strong, and what makes it intelligent.

A strong type of living being seems to evoke a sense of power, ferocity, and dominance. What better example than the Atlantic Pollock? where there is strength in individuality there is more strength in numbers. The Atlantic Pollock is a game fish with no real defensive or offensive mechanisms, but it makes up for that in shear numbers. It has been recorded by fishing vessels that schools of Pollock could be measured in square miles and when a predator like a killer whale was picking off strays underneath, the surface of the ocean would boil with jumping fish for as far as the eye could see. These massive schools of fish were registered as the largest group of bionic organisms ever recorded. Contrary to what you might be thinking about these clever Pollock they are now extinct. Due to the over harvesting by European gill nets, to supply the incredible demand for fish and chips in most European countries.

A brilliant organism to examine for intelligence are human beings. Human beings operate well as a group, they kill enough of each other to maintain a healthy balance of populous. This type of self balancing can also be found in certain species of primates that kill and eat their own kind, even though their bodies cannot digest the meat. It is an inherit balancing act to support the overall health of a society.

Strength did not help the Atlantic Pollock's life span, nor will intelligence really save the human existence. The really advantageous quality that any species needs to maintain a healthy existence is nothing. The planet itself has its own balance act, it will do whatever necessary to keep its self healthy. It has wiped out countless species of animals to keep going and it will always wipe out whatever species it deems necessary. It will also aid in adapting a single species so that it may continue its important objective whatever that may be.

All things considered the individual species, individual creatures, and even the bacteria that the creatures are comprised of are all one. Any species can be and will be sacrificed or aided to keep the balance. The earth has destroyed the dinosaurs to make way for man, and when we are creating enough in-balance we too will be wiped out or the earth will adapt us to fit the new environment.
