1820 was the third of four times that an existing state became two states. In an effort to keep the number of slave states and free states equal at the time that Missouri put in its request for statehood, the federal government asked Massachusetts to surrender the half of the state east of New Hampshire. Massachusetts agreed, and its northeastern half became Maine.

The Federalist Party was history by that point in history, leaving one major party, the Democratic-Republican Party. As a result, James Monroe ran unopposed in the election of 1820, and in 1824 there were four Democratic-Republican candidates, none of whom received the required minimum number of electoral votes.
