the ignition coil is probably bad-when they get hot they quit running. when they cool down it will restart and run until it warms up again.
Another possibility is that there may be debris under the plastic engine cover that is blocking the air flow to the head causing it to overheat. There are only five screws holding this cover on. Once you remove them you can slide the cover off and check to make sure it is clean under there.

No there is no way to deode the serial number but by writing it down and taking it to your local John Deere dealer, they can easily help by telling you the year.

Write down the serial number off the seial number plate usually on the back of the tractor and go to your john deere dealer who can easily tell you the year of your tractor.
