Joseph and the "TechniCOLOR" Dream Coat is a Rock Opera written by the combined genius of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber in 1968. It was based on the story of Joseph and the coat of many colors in Genesis in which Joseph is eventually reconciled with the other Sons of Israel. So yes, that is the story's happy ending!
The original UK version actually preceded Jesus Christ Superstar (also by Andrew Lloyd Webber), the recording being released as a concept album by Decca Records in 1969. After the successful West End run in 1973 and a 1992 revival in Toronto, a video production starring Donny Osmond was released in 1999. Other revivals of the play continued in 2007-2009 and in 2010.
Joseph was the favourite son of Jacob who showed his son how much he loved him by giving him a fantastic multi-coloured coat to wear. However this really annoyed Joseph's 11 brothers who decided to get rid of him. They sold him as a slave and pretended that he had been killed by thugs. Joseph was sold to Potiphar...one of Egypt's millionaires. However Potiphar's evil wife took an interest to him but Potiphar caught them and thought that Joseph was to blame and threw him in jail. It turned out though that Joseph had a real talent for telling the future and he helped a butler and baker , the Pharoah got to hear about this and was having a problem understanding his weird dreams and asked Joseph to interpret. Joseph did and told Pharoah that he needed to protect Eygpt from a famine that would hit the country in time to come. Pharoah was so pleased that he made Joseph his number 2. Back in Canaan, Joseph's family were starving and decided to see if Jo would help them. Jo decided to test them however, to see if they had changed their ways. He planted a valuable cup on Benjamin, the youngest bro. He accused Ben of being a thief but the brothers stood up for Ben and offered to sacrifice themselves to save him. Jo now saw that his brothers were good men and everyone lived happily ever after!
The actuall patern would not change, but in winter it would have a thick coat, autumn losing the coat, summer normal coat (thin), spring, begining to grow the thicker coat again.

Joseph gets his coat in the first act of the play, at the end of the song "Jacob and sons" and is followed by the song "Josephs Coat."
Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is a religious based musical. However, it never mentions God. It tells the story of Joseph and how his brothers sell to to Ishmaelites and he becomes a king. While it is religious based it can easily be passed off as just a story.
The story of Joseph and the coat of many colors that his father gave him. The musical is called Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.
