During World War II, several battles stand out as most important as "turning-points" in the entire war. At sea, the Battle of the Atlantic in mid-1943 won for the Allies control of the water in the European Theater, while the Battle of Midway in mid-1942 gave the Allies (especially the United States) a key victory over the Japanese. On land, the 1942 victory by the British at El Alamein (in Egypt) and the 1942-43 victory by the Russians at Stalingrad (in Russia) against the Germans proved to be the start of the long, slow decline of Germany's power.
