It's not something you just read an answer on here and jump into. You need to learn the industry, the various taxes and fees, legal liabilities, etc. Groups of non-trucking types have tried buying their way into the trucking industry (one famous example being Ameritruck, which, among others, bought out Montfort of Colorado) and subsequently went bankrupt

This is really too broad a question to answer. In California alone, approximately twenty workers' compensation carriers went out of business (or were declared insolvent) between 2001 and 2005. The best way to find out if a carrier is still in business is to check with your state's Department of Insurance, which should list all carriers admitted to write business in your state.
