They are the headings for the values. For example, if you had totals for the amount of sales for each month of a year, the months would be the categories. For most charts, they are the titles on the horizontal or x axis. In a pie chart, they would be the names on the slices. Each value in a series of values, has an associated category. So, taking the earlier example, each total of sales would be for a different month, or in technical terms a different category.

  1. General: This is the default format for numbers when you start Excel.
  2. Number: Allows you to control the way numbers are displayed. Some examples are number of decimal places, show a comma to separte every three digits in a large number, and displaying negative numbers as red.
  3. Currency: Specify a currency symbol which will be displayed next to the value.
  4. Accounting: Same as the Currency category, except it will align the currency symbols and decimal points with the cell (like full justification).
  5. Date: Treat the contents of the cell as a date and adjust to different date display formats.
  6. Time: Formats the contents of the cell as time in a format you choose.
  7. Percentage: Automatically multiply the cell contents by 100 and display the result with a percentage symbol at the end.
  8. Fraction: Display the contents of a cell as a fraction instead of as a decimal. You can choose from various format options.
  9. Scientific: Display the contents of the cell in Scientific notation.
  10. Text: Forces the contents of the cell to display exactly entered. This is helpful when entering text which contains numbers or special characters.
  11. Special: The Special category works only for certain locations. For example, selecting the United States location will let you enter ZIP codes and phone numbers while keeping any leading zeros.
  12. Custom: Allows you to configure the cell entry as you choose.
