The reasons for the founding of the Massachusetts Bay Colony were in some respects the same as those for most of the other European settlements in the New World: gaining access to natural resources, securing new opportunities for trade, making inroads toward the Far East, advancing national prestige, and so on. Most importantly, however, this Colony sought to establish a 'city upon a hill' that would shine the light of faith throughout the world while allowing them to practice their religion freely.
