Lets assume a few things.
You were not invited, not because of a negative reason, but simply because of space.
The wedding party sent your friends invitation permitting him/her to bring a date.
If these things are yes, there shouldn't be any reason you cannot attend. Consider carefully if your invitation was withheld because of another guest. If you once dated the best man/maid of honor or have a conflict with another close friend of theirs. The invite may not have come for this reason.
If there is any doubt, ask your mutual friend is there will be a problem if you attend their wedding.
