He had worked with an operating system, CP/M, and figured out that most people would want something a whole lot easier to use. From a computer programmers point of view, CP/M, was preferred. For the average user simply wanting to sit down and make a word processor work, the Microsoft system was the best. Bill Gates sold stock to raise money to get started. Then his product took off. He created Microsoft Office. He did not have the best word processor. He did not have the best data base. He did not have the best spreadsheet. He used basically the same set of instructions for all of them. A lawyer, who must have everything picture perfect will use Word Perfect as his word processor. Everyone else will use Microsoft Word. A CPA will use a better spreadsheet. Everyone else will use Microsoft's. Bill Gates created a company for everyone, just like Sam Walton did with WalMart.

Not much, because if its not one humans idea , it would've been another. Human mind is greater then the seas , and if Bill gates werent the inventor of microsoft, someone else would have arose with the idea, and would've been the bill gate of today, just with another name !
