You should check out what the USFS is doing. We have been increasing in total acres of forest as well as density for decades.

There is more acreage of forest in North America then when the civil war was fought I wish every country followed our lead.

Conservation is all about preserving (looking after) so banning de-forestation would be the first thing or if unable to do this for poitical reasons making it sustainable ie cutting down a certain number per month and then replanting the same amount that has been cut down. this keeps the locals happy and helps preserve forests. you can also cut down smaller trees leaving the larger ones which provide seeds and shelter for any new growing shoots. there is an technique known as slash and burn in which a set out area of forest is cut down completely then set alight. the carbon from the burnt wood provides nutrients for new vegetation and the stumps that have been left re-grow this then encourages further growth as the ground is still firm and stable. precipitation can fall to the ground without getting caught on taller canopy trees. so its a win win situation apart from if it gets out of control it could cause damage to more of the forests or even local towns or cities.
