Practice and training. The record for a mile is less than 4 minutes, so half a mile should be easy.
it depends on what your current mile time is, but you should start training about 4 weeks in advance for the mile run. run 6 times a week, mixing up 3-5 mile runs with practice miles on a track, or another venue of known distance. good luck
He is a sprinter so he does not need as much endurance training but still runs about 3 miles for just a run, but a lot is sprint workouts which can range from a few hundred meters to a mile or two
