Mr. Ed, TV's most yakkity horse, was an American Saddlebred. His real name was Bamboo Harvester. As a child I thought he could really talk, but later learned that they used certain little tricks to get Ed's lips to move. Peanut Butter in his mouth was one of them.
Mr. Ed was voiced by Allan Lane. He died in 1973. The name of the horse who portrayed Mr. Ed was a gelding named Bamboo Harvester. He was put down in 1970, due to a number of age related health problems he was suffering. There was a second horse, which was used in still photographs for press kits to promote the show, but who was never actually on the show. That one died in 1979.
