Jiggle steering wheel, you may have to turn it back and forth pretty hard, also simultaneously move the shift lever if it's on the steering column. Put it in neutral if possible, remember to put your foot on the brake! I don't know if this works for manual transmission cars, Good luck

According to locksmith the pins in the ignition lock wear down because of the weight of the key ring bouncing while driving. Emergency fix is to put a full metal key in the ignition (one without a locking control fob) and tap it with a hammer. I have done it with the fobbed key by using my fist but that hurts. Dealer wants over $100 to fix but locksmith fixed mine for $25 by removing the worn pin.

Locksmith also recommended reducing the number of keys on your car key ring to avoid this problem.

Locksmith said this was a common problem with Chrysler vehicles. My problem was on a Durango.

While some people maintain that maybe pressure from the steering column could cause it to lock up (wheel turned too far while parked), this is actually known to be a design flaw on 2000-2003 models of the Ford Focus. The tumblers (pins) within the ignition cylinder become jammed, and consequently must be drilled out.

This is covered under a standard manufacturers warantee, however most warantees are already expired. Ford has yet to issue a recall on these due to a 'limited' number of complaints. Though this can create a safety hazard, as people can become stuck out in the middle of nowhere, placing themselves at risk because of the design flaw.

Calling a Ford Dealership will yield little results unless your willing to pay between $400 - $600. Some people have had success in a free repair by calling Ford's Customer Service line and registering a complaint.

A class action suit has been filed in the State of California in an attempt to persuade Ford to issue a recall due to safety concerns.

The steering is locked. What you need to do to unlock it is to just turn the wheel a little bit as you turn the key and the ignition and the steering wheel will free up.

Could be some different causes, but first try squirting some WD40 down the key slot with a red nozzle.
