The key ingredient in most nail polish removers is acetone.

Those which are not made from acetone are typically made with the key ingredient of ethyl acetate.

The main ingredients are than diluted with any number of additional ingredients such as alcohol, water, propylene carbonate, glycerin, castor oil or Gelatin to obtain a desired consistency. Additional fragrances and colorings may also be added to make the smell and appearance more tolerable.
