There are a number of senior commanders, whose deeds and memoirs have been published. Start with Eisenhower, Patton, MacArthur, Bradley, Montomery, Alexander, Slim, Guderian, Rommel, Model, Manstein, Von Kleist,Von Rundstead, Konev, Zhukov. But then it is essential to know something of the war from the perspective of those who were not dealing with maps and meetings, but mud and mayhem: Seigfried Knappe, Friedrich Busch, Erwin Muller, James Blue, Woodrow Kessler, Alan Baer, Oliver Boland. To find their stories, reading in detail is required. A good number of the names above can be found in "Pegasus Bridge" (Stephen Ambrose) and "Dawn of D-Day" (David Howarth).
